Sparkling Franciacorta for Alex Caffi Motorsports

21 mei 2018

Franciacorta (BS), 20 may 2018. Alex Caffi Motorsports always at the forefront in the
second round of the 2018 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series 2018 on the Autodromo di Franciacorta,
from where the team coordinated by the Monegasque former F1 driver returns with the double
victory of Carmen Boix in the Lady classification. The Spaniard is now solitary in the standings’
lead. The stars of the spectacular series born in the United States, on 5.7-liter Chevrolet
powered cars with a 450 Bhp, a weight of 1,200 kg and rear-wheel drive, have battled on the
renewed Italian track in front of a large audience of fans. In race 2 of the Elite 1, Alex Caffi
was up into the top ten with his Ford Mustang. The former F1 driver started 21st and made the
most of the re-starts after the safety car, climbing up to the tenth position thanks to an
aggressive driving, before losing ground after a contact in the final stages and finished 13th.
The Toyota Camry allowed Kenko Miura, who set off 22nd, to climb back to the third podium
step in the Challenge standings. In Elite 2 the strong driver from Treviso Denny Zardo, after
his 4th place in race 1 had become 11th following a penalty, started with the Toyota Camry
from the second row thanks to the fourth fastest lap on Saturday. In a tight fight for third
place, he had to stop after a contact suffered by a rival which caused him to puncture the right
rear tyre. Young Spanish Carmen Boix has repeated Saturday’s success among the Ladies,
obtaining her third consecutive class win after victory in race 2 on the home track in Valencia.
In race 2 Carmen has gained many positions bringing the Ford Mustang unharmed through the
various accidents at the start up to 11th place, before being penalized with a drive through for
a jump start. Returning to the track behind her rival just a few laps from the end, she
managed to overtake her in the penultimate lap. In the Elite Club, the series’ scholarship
formula, Belgian Jerome Francois on the Ford Mustang was second fastest at the end of the
three sessions, while Austrian Andreas Kuchelbacher finished sixth with the Toyota Camry.

Alex Caffi said “I had a lot of fun, I think I did a good race, giving a show, as well as doing
some overtaking. Today was better than yesterday even though it was tough because it was
very hot, my pace was good, I went well in the restarts and when I arrived in the top ten I
lowered my lap times by over a second, I could therefore stay in touch. In the last two laps I
tried to pass another driver but we touched each other. Overall I am very happy for the team,
the balance is positive. Last year here we had won Elite 2 and a podium was within reach with
Denny who proved that he deserved it, but this too is racing. Carmen won twice despite a
penalty, Kenko took a podium in the Challenge and the two Elite Club guys did well. I am
happy to have seen many friends and fans of the team, I hope they enjoyed it.”

The next round of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series will be in three weeks, 8-10 june, on the
historic british track of Brands Hatch.
