SILK WAY RALLY 2021: LUC ALPHAND APPOINTED SPORTING DIRECTOR, NEW RACE ROUTE

17 februari 2021

SWR Organization Committee is glad to welcome Luc Alphand as Sporting Director.
For every sport fan, Luc is an iconic person: an Alpine Skiing World Cup champion, winner of several international car races, he is an expert, who participates actively in the organization of world’s greatest competitions. During the last five years, Luc Alphand has held the position of Sport and Competitors’ Relations Advisor to Silk Way Rally Director.

Due to modifications in rally sports policy and considering suggestions and expectations of competitors, the Organization Committee together with the China Auto Moto Federation (CAMF) made the joint decision to modify the racing route of the Silk Way Rally 2021: new route will cross Russia and Mongolia.

Dates remain the same and this summer, from July 1st to 11th, the Silk Way Rally will enable its participants to set off for an amazing journey to discover the beautiful Siberia, unique landscapes of Mongolia, ancient history and rich culture of rally host countries. Across highlands, taiga, steppes and desert, competitors will have the opportunity to test themselves and their vehicles on demanding tracks.

As Silk Way Rally is the only Marathon event of the season, both round of the FIA Cross Country World Cup and of the FIM Cross Country World Championship, the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation, FIA, FIM, the Russian Automobile Federation and the Motorcycle Federation of Russia have been informed of this decision, that they approved.

Race entries will open on March 1st from when it will be possible for competitors to register on silkwayrally.com

THE SILK WAY IN A FEW WORDS

The SILK WAY RALLY, whose first edition linked Russia to Turkmenistan in 2009, celebrates its 11th anniversary in 2021 by crossing the main regions and countries of the ancient ‘Silk Road’ in the heart of Central Asia.

Coveted by the big teams and the most decorated champions in the discipline, but also by many amateurs, the SILK WAY RALLY has been won by some impressive names: CARLOS SAINZ, CYRIL DESPRES , YAZEED AL RAJHI and NASSER AL ATTIYAH, who on the 2019 edition pulled off the unique feat of winning all 9 stages.

In the truck category it is the KAMAZ MASTER TEAM with DMITRY SOTNIKOV, EDUARD NIKOLAEV, AYRAT MARDEEV, ANTON SHIBALOV, ANDREY KARGINOV and FIRDAUS KABIROV who’ve shared the victories since 2009, supremacy thwarted in 2011 by TATRA TEAM and his pilot ALES LOPRAIS.

In 2019 SAM SUNDERLAND (KTM) was the first bike rider to win the category on the SILK WAY RALLY, winning at the same time the second round of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship.
